Deborah Williams
Born 1967, Melbourne, Victoria.
Deborah Williams practice is print-based and investigates the representation of the dog in contemporary culture.
Throughout her career, Williams art practice has traversed from portrayals ranging from metaphoric and anthropomorphic, to investigations in cultural and conceptual diversity in attitude towards dogs and the idea of pet ‘ownership’.
She has explored divisions and alliances between ‘us and them’, and her more recent enquiry has been to recognize a dog’s sentience, including agency and resistance, and as such, depict the dog as subject rather than object.
Since 1993, Williams has exhibited regularly in both solo and group exhibitions Internationally and within Australia. Deborah has been a finalist in major art prizes including National Works on Paper Award, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Fremantle Print Award, WA and Gold Coast City Gallery Art Prize.
Her work has been acquired by many private and public art collections around the world including, National Gallery of Australia; Art Gallery of NSW; Portland Art Museum, USA; The Chicago Print Collective Workshop, USA; and the Chiang Mai Contemporary Art Museum, Thailand. In 2010 she was the winner of the Swan Hill Print Award.
Williams studied BA Fine Art at Victoria College, Prahran, Honors at RMIT and completed a Master of Fine Art by Research at the National Art School, Sydney.
