Julianne Ross Allcorn

Born 1960, Rabaul Papua New Guinea.

Born in 1960 in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, Julianne Ross Allcorn developed an early passion for drawing, mainly inspired by the vibrant flora of her surroundings.

At age ten, she relocated to Sydney, Australia, where she continued to nurture her artistic talents. Her educational journey included attending boarding school at Wenona in North Sydney, followed by extensive travels in Europe at the age of 23, which further influenced her artistic perspective.

Julianne’s training in classical ballet has given her the discipline needed for a practising artist/teacher, and her initial training at the Shillito School of Design under Phylis Shillito also worked to influence her use of colour and movement.

Based in Roseville, near Sydney, Julianne is a practising artist and art teacher with over two decades of experience. Her work is deeply inspired by the Australian bush, particularly the flora and fauna surrounding her garden studio in the Burralong Valley, Lower Hunter.

Julianne spends considerable time developing and planning her journal sketches, drawing from real-life observations to create detailed studies of insects, birds, and plants.

Julianne’s distinctive technique involves working on birch wood panels, where she employs pencil and a small dremel to etch textures into the surface, complemented by watercolours to bring the soft hues of the bush to life.

Julianne’s dedication to capturing the essence of the Australian landscape has earned her recognition as a finalist in prestigious art prizes, including the Archibald and Wynne Prizes in 2021, and the Trustees Watercolour Prize in 2020.
