Philip
Davey

Born 1949, England

Painter, ceramicist, draughtsman and printmaker Philip Davey was born in England in 1949, arriving in Australia in 1957. His broad practice incorporates images of urban and natural landscape, as well as figurative narrative works, often inspired by classic Australian texts.

He has been artist in residence at several Victorian secondary institutions. Davey has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney, and his work is held by Artbank, Sydney; the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne and several regional collections.

For the Term of His Natural Life

Marcus Clarke’s novel For the Term of His Natural Life, first published in 1874, has inspired a rich history of artistic production.

It was the subject of the first feature-length film made in Australia and is recognised as the first classic Australian novel.

But the artistic influence of this epic text has faded in recent years, despite the rise of writers and filmmakers who have taken convict society as their subject….

… Philip Davey offers a new vision of the history of Australia as described by one of its great early writers.
