Arboretum Adrift relates the moving story of a sprawling old tribal tree that stood proud at the edge of the Grandfathers Woods. Here, under its vast canopy, with dark times approaching, the tribe promised not to leave the tree behind. Gradually, they dug a deep trench around the tree; a strong- boat was built around the roots and with a deep keel to hold the earth and the tree’s memories within it. Then, with the early summer rains breaching the river bank, they launched the tree into the slow stream and let it drift down to the sea, where they lashed a sail to the strongest branches and set a course due north to their new home.

A time came when they knew they had to leave. They placed their trust in a captain of shady character, but since he wore the robes of religion, his word was taken. They loaded their trees, their cuttings, and seeds, and set sail for a new land; with one eye on the dark clouds and one eye on the captain.

He took his time to make the boat. Once finished, before he pushed it into the water; he walked around it, admired the graceful lines, the gentle grain of the old wood, the smell of pitch. He then spoke softly to it, lay the crafted oars into it, side by side, pushed it into the water and gave the boat its soul.

On an untamed expanse of land there lived a man who took his time and planted many trees; trees collected on his many wanderings. Over time the trees grew dense and tangled and hid the man as he grew old. Passers-by would sometimes glimpse him, lanky and still, in brief slanting rays of sunlight. Could have short conversations. Long after he passed, they recalled the conversations and sometimes wondered if they had talked to the man or the trees.

A little boat once asked its Grandfather; being so small how far could it sail into the unknown? It was told that it was not its size that mattered but the strength of its sail and the colours of its dreams that will sail it to the ends of the Earth.

On a clear winter night, a little person asked the Grandfather if Winter had come to stay and will it ever be warm again. Grandfather quietly answered, if one lies down on the ground and stay very still, one can hear the soft breathing of Spring as she lies sleeping at Winter’s foot, the clear tinkling of her dreams that will turn cold frosted flowers into the new season’s blooms.

A small band of wandering people found a narrow clearing in the woods, here the filtered shafts of sunlight fell all the way to the leafy floor. It was a small clearing and after much discussion it was decided to build all the houses on top of one another to leave enough space to plant all their fruit and flowers.
