• A print folio in celebration of the Baldessin Press & Studio

It is with great pleasure that the Baldessin Press & Studio announced the launch of the commemorative folio Baldessin & Friends, an initiative to celebrate its 15th anniversary as a not-for-profit organisation, continuing the legacy of the renowned printmaker and sculptor George Baldessin (1939 - 1978).

The folio brings together seven celebrated Australian artists - Rick Amor, GW Bot, Jock Clutterbuck, Michael Leunig, Jan Senbergs, Imants Tillers and John Wolseley - all of whom share a personal connection to Baldessin, or to the Press itself. Each artist generously created a new work specifically for this project, which is presented alongside the posthumous print Portrait II, 1966, from the incomplete edition by George Baldessin. The majority of the prints (Amor, Baldessin, Leunig, Senbergs and Tillers) were printed in collaboration with Deanna Hitti on George Baldessin’s 1974 Enjay press, which was newly refurbished for the occasion. Printing of works by Clutterbuck, GW Bot and Wolseley was kindly completed by the artist or their studio.

Housed within a beautiful presentation box, these eight works are accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, with an introduction by Professor Sasha Grishin. Of the 25 in the edition, only 15 were made available for sale. This folio has been made available by the Estate of (the late) Michael Leunig.

New lands proved tough for the women. They longed for their old homes of stone and the peach trees that shaded the back yards. An ultimatum was put to the men, all the women will sail back home! The men thought that this was amusing, since the women had no sail. The women declared that they would use the Sunday dresses of the plump, with the side seams undone and it will catch the wind in its ample hips and sail them swiftly home.

The ocean calm, slowly drifting closer in a cloud of light. The old tree seemed so much taller, even prouder, with remnants of the exquisite vine held safely high in his branches. The boat they barely recognise, now a deep red, its prow still slender but new tentative young buds growing out. The boat has found its heart of fire.

Wind-blown, tired and covered in flotsam and kelp, the cold current pushed the boat into a quiet cove. High on the rocks stood a stunted tree, branches broken and barely alive. The sapling next to him, he said was his daughter, strong and colourful, like her mother. She held the tired boat firmly while the two old trees discussed the absence of sunshine. Their murmurings were overheard by a large fish residing in the deep. Gliding gracefully to the surface, the fish said he is called the Wanderer, he knew where to find the sun and how to return the light. He had swum all the oceans known to man and fish. He would gladly show them the way, but oceans are wild and greedy, and they need to travel light and fast. The old tree then called upon the gulls to clear his head and lighten the boat.

Exhausted by the long journey and rough ocean, the boat simply fell asleep. The cold current collapsed in shallow puddles and the fish declared he needed the deep to sleep. The tree felt restless, a bit itchy but deep into the starless night, he drifted off. He woke with a start as the first shaft of light broke through the fog. It touched his branches; the warmth sent a shiver down his trunk and woke the boat. They were floating in light. An exquisite vine had sprouted in the hollows of the tree, in full bloom, clouds of golden pollen drifted in the early morning light.

Here, he would often lower his anchor, tie his boat and fish all day. Wind-blown the tree stood, proudly bowed in strength, her roots wise and buried deep. His boat was new, the wood still young and freshly oiled. The tree watched it rocking on the tide, the high, proud bow, the gleaming planks and under the stillness of the sky, she fell in love. She let her leaves whisper to the new wood, shade it from the sun, showered it with blooms and fragrance. Then, on a cold evening, with the river veiled in mist, the boat nestled firmly into the mud and rocks. It chose to stay, tied to his tree.

Here, under its vast canopy, with dark times approaching, the tribe promised not to leave the tree behind. Gradually, they dug a deep trench around the tree; a strong- boat was built around the roots and with a deep keel to hold the earth and the tree’s memories within it. Then, with the early summer rains breaching the river bank, they launched the tree into the slow stream and let it drift down to the sea, where they lashed a sail to the strongest branches and set a course due north to their new home.

At the water’s edge of a windy ocean, lived a small band of people. They decided to build a tall house. Proud it stood on an impossible rock, eyes blinking into the salt and the howling winds. The women soon found small birds sheltering at the back-door steps. So, they planted them a garden of fragrant blooms and sturdy trees, filled bowls with fresh water and laid out trays of crumbs. Some birds stayed and kept them company, while others came to rest briefly, recover, and then open their wings, lift into the wind, and call their piercing goodbyes.

They placed their trust in a captain of shady character, but since he wore the robes of religion, his word was taken. They loaded their trees, their cuttings, and seeds, and set sail for a new land; with one eye on the dark clouds and one eye on the captain.

Over time the trees grew dense and tangled and hid the man as he grew old. Passers-by would sometimes glimpse him, lanky and still, in brief slanting rays of sunlight. Could have short conversations. Long after he passed, they recalled the conversations and sometimes wondered if they had talked to the man or the trees.
